Last Call

Last Call
by Randall Mann

A giant bird-
of-paradise
has climbed the bar:
in this paradise

there are no flowers,
no flowers at all.
When Happy Hour
becomes Last Call—

Adam in drag
our royalty—
we buy her gin
for eternity

(an unseen deejay
scores the years
with pulsing music
of the spheres).

Now the queen has gone,
gone again
in search of love,
in search of sin.

It’s closing time.
You were not at fault.
I drain my glass
and lick the salt.

Literary Analysis
“Last Call” is about the memory of the loss of love and the destruction in the past. The subject of this poem is sad memories of a past event and the lost love that is the cause of its destruction. The mood of the poem is melancholy. sad with a sense of loss.

The tone has a large amount of gloomy feelings and emotions. The title of the poem is symbolic and represents a last chance or opportunity for new life and a new beginning. The speaker is someone who narrates an event of destruction to which he faces and to which he submits.

The poem begins with the Description of a beautiful bird that is called a bird of paradise by the spokesman "A giant bird of paradise / has climbed the bar" Then the speaker describes the destructive moment that destroyed everything in a place that looks like paradise. He uses a metaphor (paradise) to describe the beautiful place before this unfortunate event. The place was like a paradise for its residents and for those who used to visit it. Now there is no charm and no beauty, as he points out: "There are no flowers / no flowers at all." Although the place is recovering, it has not been able to regain the beauty and life it used to have.

Here two lines refer to the last chance and the last moment of a life to be destroyed by nature and to the title also - "When happy hour / last call will." Then the speaker talks about Adam, a little boy who walks through this area and remembers the good years he spent there. The speaker alludes to Adam (the father of men), who was evicted from Paradise due to his deliberate mistake. A man who plays music that brings back memories of those blissful days: "An invisible DJ scores with the years." Dichter again uses metaphors like "scores the years" to remember the memories. Then the speaker continues his story and says that the queen of this paradise will commit a sin again (as Adam and Eve committed) Queen has gone / gone again. "The poet apparently blames the lovers for their love and says it is a sin that has brought disaster. Now the time is over because all is lost and she (the queen) can no longer find her partner. She has lost it "It's closing time." Since all is lost due to a natural disaster, she is unhappy in this regard when he says, "It was not your fault."

Structural Analysis
This is a lyric poem. However, it has a touch of storytelling flair as well. There are six stanzas in this poem and it has a regular rhyme scheme: ABCB, which is used throughout the poem:

A giant bird- A
from paradise B
has raised the bar: C
in this paradise B

The metric pattern for this poem is an iambic monometer with alternate iambic diameter as "A giant bird / of-paradise / has raised the bar." End of lines that are seen in different places in the poem, such as "It's time to close. / You were not to blame. / I rush the glass." The final stop is used three times in the last three lines of the poem.

Enjambment is also used in some lines, such as “A giant bird / of paradise / has raised the bar. In these three lines the meaning moves into the following lines. The language and diction of this poem are figurative and connotative. The poem lacks alliteration and assonance; Hence, there is no such thing as an outstanding rhythm. The repetition is used three times in two stanzas, on the one hand as "there are no flowers / no flowers at all". In addition, the poet uses Anakoluthon as a literary device, which is an abrupt change in the grammatical flow of the sentence like "Adam in Drag / Our Royalty". The two lines have different meanings overall; The purpose of this change is to get the reader's attention.
