Grant Essays vary dramatically by subject. Most of them, however, require a retelling of personal experiences. These tips are more useful for personal essay writing such as the National Merit Scholarship than for academic essay writing.

The most important aspect of your Scholarship essay is the subject. You should expect to spend about 1-2 weeks just brainstorming ideas. To start brainstorming topic ideas, here are some things to consider. As you brainstorm, you may find a topic that you didn't consider at first.

What are your Key Achievements, and why do you consider them to be achievements? Don't limit yourself to accomplishments for which you've been officially recognized, as the most interesting essays are often based on accomplishments that might be mundane at the time but become crucial in the context of this, especially if the scholarship committee has a list of your credentials anyway receives.
Does any attribute, quality or ability distinguish you from others? How did you develop this attribute?
Consider your favorite books, movies, works of art, etc. Have they influenced your life in a significant way? Why are they your favorites?
What was the most difficult moment of your life and why? How did your outlook on life change as a result of the difficulty?
Have you ever fought mightily for something and did it? What made you successful?
failed? How did you reply?
Of everything in the world, what would you like to be doing the most right now? Where would you like to be more? With whom, of all the living and the dead, would you like to be more? These questions should help you realize what you love the most.
Have you experienced a moment of epiphany, as if your eyes were open to something that you were blind before? How would your friends characterize you? What would they write about if they were writing your scholarship essay for you?
What have you been doing outside of the classroom that has the qualities universities want? Of these, what is most important to you?
What are your main extracurricular or community activities? Why did you join these activities? Why did you keep contributing?
What are your dreams about the future? When you look back on your life thirty years from now, what would it take you to see your life as successful? Which people, things and services do you need? How does this particular scholarship fit? in your plans for the future?
